Many moons i have passed to return to thee sacred place of movie reviewing awesomeness and joyfull fit has entered my once beaten body of twillight and gay vampire shit festery and today's hideous movie propaganda. Allright enough of that mystical speaking crap, i just wanted to say hello and happy first review! even though i re-posted one of my old reviews and i just re-edited it(lazy re-bastard).
So today we spring into Sords and Sorcery genre ''a la Italiana'' with the always great Lucio Fulci combining awesome fantasy, pre CGI effects, hairy almost Chewbaca like beast henchmen, a wicked topples sorceres with a golden mask(wich is always nice), and a hero who faces a great test or courage and bravery along with a lone warrior who will redeem himself and face what he once turned his back on(and no it's not Reb Brown), all covered in gooey Fulci trademark gore, This is Conquest baby!.
In a far alternate time of earth when mythological beings and savagery ruled the earth one choosen youth named Ilias gifted with a bow made by the gods sends his path into forsaken wastelands of fog and death to proove his manhood and return to his people a hero.
On the other side of the land,Ocron a sadistic sorceres who wears snakes for underwear has terrorized the land with her wolf like soldiers creating horror among the few tribesman, killing without mercy young virgins so she can cast spells and regain her youth, in a dream she sees a faceless warrior who apparently will end her evil ways forever, scared shitless of this vision she send every evil minnion after this warrior and to bring her the sacred weapon he carries with him.
When our hero roams the land he stumbles upon the evil sorceres minions but he's saved by a fearsome beastmaster and man hunter named Mace, at first Mace hates the idea of walking with a man but little to little he starts to gain confidence into him, he takes him into a cave where a few tribespeople live 2 of the women and the other 2 children, when the night comes Ilias falls in love with the youngest of the women but everithing goes to hell for evil finds our heroes in the cave and slaughter everyone on sight only surviving Ilias and Mace(so much for heroes).
Ocron knowing that their minnions failed she summons an evil cactus like armored demon called Zora who offers him her body and soul in exchange of the head of this warrior, in the wilderness he attacks our heroes hurting Ilias and poisoning him, in a last attempt to save Ilias Mace travels to a deeps swamp where grows a mirace branch that can cure any poison no matter who powerfull it is, but in the way back he fights off hideous zombie swamp creatures.
Being brought from the claws of death Ilias and Mace continue their journey knowing that this may be a fail glory, Mace propose Ilias to return to his people and to end it all, when he does Mace is quickly captured by Zora's wicked lizards minnions, tying him up and threatening him to torture for information, Mace just lays quiet, only to be saved by Ilias after releazing that honor and bravery stands above all even death, so with the power of the gods he transforms his bow into a laser shooting bow (wich gives the effects from Starcrash a run for it's money) saving Mace and calling it even.
Thinking there safe our heroes rest in a cave but Zora's minions once more come to attack taking Ilias deep in the cave, Mace quickly runs after him but after many dangers he croses he sees the headless body of Ilias hanged on the wall, Zora killed Ilias.
As a last act of honor Mace burns the body of Ilias but a voice from heaven tells Mace that he smears himslef the ashes of Ilias and to take the bow to finnish evil and avenge his fallen friend, as a final stand he faces the last minions of Ocron but they quickly fall under the magic bow, abbandoned by Zora and the rest of her group Mace shoots a final arrow into Ocron's mask breaking it and revealing the horrible decrepit monster she really is, killing her human body and transforming herself into a wolf her soul can escape.
And now the evil has been vanquished and our hero Mace with his new powers walks the earth into infinity.
...Uff man was that a story or what!, and yeah i know, what's with that epic story telling? well i couldn't tell the review in another way, but i will not happen again(not promising nothing).
So overall the movie its pretty sweet, its a neat change for Mr. Fulci to have away from Zombies, Serial killers and ghosts and taking over the Conan and Krull type filmaking, it kinda makes you wish he made more movies like this one, shit can you imagine him directing Yor: Hunter from the Future? Reb Brown kicking some zombie ass.
With a kickass soundtrack, some decent gore/nudity and cheesy costumes Conquest stands on it's own as a fantasy flick and yeah although they were some things that bother me like the damn fog that is almost covering the screen(fog fetish) or the abrupt ending, still makes a worthwile flick and a great piece for you movie collection.
